Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay's birth took place on August 24 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay received encouragement from Aunt Denise as an infant. Her aunt was an overnight nurse so that she could have the opportunity to study art literature or theater. She introduced DuVernay the 1961 film West Side Story and DuVernay fell in love with it. DuVernay was taught by her that art could be an avenue for action. Similarly DuVernay's mother was socially aware and taught her to say something through the arts. DuVernay, who grew up together with her parents in Compton, spent each summer at Lowndes County Alabama in the house of her father's family. DuVernay's Father recalled witnessing the historic march of the Civil Rights Movement on the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was located in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. DuVernay was inspired by her summers in Alabama to inspire her film Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated with a high school diploma at Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. DuVernay attended University of California Los Angeles upon graduation. There she received diplomas in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay began producing for the broadcast industry while she was in her the college. She worked as a CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was told to take a look at the junk of a jury member's home. Her tasks left her disappointed in journalism, so she decided to shift her focus towards the field of publicity. DuVernay got her first job as a publicist in a small production studio right out of high school. She was promoted to the position and set up her own public relations company called The DuVernay Agency in 1999.
